Why do we tell our coming out stories? What is the significance in this ritual?
For many, coming out is “coming of age” – it’s often a bittersweet experience, fraught with anxiety and stress. Will we be accepted – will the people we care about continue to care about us?
Many are welcomed with open arms by friends and family alike. Others are spurned and must grieve the loss of family and friends.
Some of us face thoughts of suicide when the idea or reality of our coming out becomes too much to bear. We yearn to hear other stories, to have our experiences validated. To know that we are not alone.
Telling our stories is a rite of passage, a way of sharing the common struggle of understanding an identity that is often in conflict with the family and social values of our communities. Part of that struggle is asserting our own identities and creating our own communities. These are OUR stories.
